References

References are people who know what kind of worker you are and who will give you a positive recommendation. If a potential employer wants to get some background information about you before making you a job offer, s/he might contact one of your three (3) references.
 
That is the reason why you need to have a page in your portfolio that includes a list of three names of such people.  Those recommending you need to know that you are publishing there information.  They need to be asked! Here are some guidelines for you to follow when you are completing your list of references.

Make a copy of this template to write to your references.

1. Try for three (3):
  • one from your career center teacher
  • one from a teacher in your sending school
  • one from a current or former employer
Important Note: Do not use a family member; you need someone who can be objective about your skills.
 
2. Get the following information, correctly spelled, for each reference:
  • Name
  • Job Title                                                                                                                                                        
  • Business/School Name
  • Address
  • Telephone Number
  • Email Address
 
3. Be sure to ask each person on your list for permission to use his or her name as a reference. It’s polite, and it’s good business.
